Who is Stephanie Dinkin?

Stephanie Dinkins is an American artist whose work explores the connections between artificial intelligence (AI), race, gender, and social justice. She is especially interested in how AI systems reflect society, and how they often leave out the voices of marginalized groups, especially Black and brown communities. She teaches at Stony Brook University and works with communities to help people use art and technology for social change.

What are two famous artworks by Stephanie Dinkins?

One of Stephanie Dinkins’s well-known artworks is Conversations with Bina48, a robot designed to look like a Black woman. In this long-term project, she has conversations with BINA48 about identity, race, and how people connect with technology. These talks show how race and gender shape our understanding of AI. The artwork has been exhibited in many places and is often used in discussions about fair and ethical AI.

Another well-known artwork by Stephanie Dinkins is Not the Only One, an AI chatbot trained with stories from three generations of Black women in her family. It speaks in the first person and shares thoughts based on their real-life experiences. The project uses AI to protect and share cultural knowledge. It also shows that technology can be shaped by different voices, not just big companies or mainstream data.

What can we reflect about Stephanie Dinkins from her artworks?

Stephanie Dinkins’s artworks made me think differently about technology. I used to think AI was just about machines and data, but her work shows that AI also carries human values, stories, and bias. I learned that technology is not neutral because it reflects the people who build it and the data it learns from.

Her projects helped me understand why it’s important to include diverse voices in tech. By using stories from Black women and talking with BINA48, she shows that AI can be personal and cultural. She uses new media art, such as AI, interactive storytelling, and data-based systems to explore how technology connects with identity and community. I now believe that art and technology can work together to create more fair and caring systems.
