Who is Jeffery Shaw?

Jeffrey Shaw was born in Melbourne in 1944. He is a well-known artist and researcher in the field of new media art. He is especially known for his work with virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and interactive storytelling. Since the 1960s, he has been a leader in digital and interactive art that explore expanded cinema, immersive 3D environments, and interactive stories.

What is “Expanded Cinema”?

Expanded cinema is a kind of experimental film that combines art, technology, and storytelling in creative ways. It uses multimedia, interactive elements, and immersive spaces to create a new kind of experience, instead of just showing a story on one screen. The term was first used in the 1960s by filmmaker Stan VanDerBeek. Artists and filmmakers wanted to change how people watch films. They encouraged them to take part, move around, and feel involved, rather than just sit and watch.

What is an important artwork by Jeffrey Shaw?

One of Jeffrey Shaw’s most important artworks is Points of View (1983–1984). a pioneering interactive installation that redefined how audiences engage with digital art. In this work, viewers use a joystick to move and choose what they see in a virtual space. This gives them control and makes them part of the experience.

Points of View is a good example of expanded cinema because it replaces the fixed screen with an interactive environment. It mixes technology, movement, and storytelling, showing his goal to make new ways of cinematic experience.

What kind of inspiration can we get from Jeffrey Shaw’s artwork?

Jeffrey Shaw’s artworks make me think differently about the relationship between art and media. His use of technology, such as VR, AR, and interactive systems, shows that art is not only for looking but also for doing. I feel inspired by how he combines digital tools with storytelling and space to create new kinds of experiences.

His work is an important part of new media art because it uses computers, screens, sensors, and virtual environments to change how we see and feel art. This makes me reflect on how contemporary artists can use technology not only to express ideas but also to build worlds that people can explore.
